Vocal fold polyp

Vocal cord polyp

A vocal cord polyp is a localized thickening just beneath the epithelium of the vocal cords. It usually occurs on one side and can have different shapes and locations, with the most common location being in the middle of the vocal cord in men. The voice becomes hoarse, rough, and slightly breathy with a polyp.

Epidemiology:

It primarily affects men between the ages of 30 and 50.

Occurrence:

Unilateral on the vocal cord

Often between the anterior and middle third.

Etiology and Pathogenesis:

The main cause is excessive mechanical strain on the vocal cords (e.g., loud coughing, throat clearing, screaming). The most significant risk factor is smoking.

Symptoms:

Hoarseness

Diplophonia (double voice)

Feeling of a foreign body

Irritative cough

Frequent throat clearing.

Treatment of Vocal Cord Polyp:

The possibility of cancer should be ruled out. Stroboscopic examination with HD technology can confirm the clinical diagnosis and exclude laryngeal cancer. Histological examination of the removed polyp provides a definitive and accurate diagnosis if there is a clinical suspicion.

Otherwise, the polyp itself is harmless, but if there is severe hoarseness and significant distress, surgical removal may be considered. The surgical excision can be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia, possibly with the use of a blue laser. We recommend subsequent speech therapy (logopedic voice therapy) to learn how to use the vocal cords more gently.

After

The treatment is also possible using the Blue Laser under local anesthesia.
