Vocal Cord Dysfunction

Vocal Cord Dysfunction is a malfunction of the vocal cords that leads to sudden onset of breathlessness and respiratory distress, which is sometimes perceived as life-threatening. The symptoms affect inhalation rather than exhalation. However, we often observe that this condition is mistakenly interpreted and treated as bronchial asthma. It primarily affects athletic adolescents, mostly female patients.

Laryngoscopy typically reveals a paradoxical closure of the vocal cords during inhalation, which can be provoked by forced breathing or exertion.

Treatment:

In most cases, a thorough examination and explanation to the patient and their family about the benign and self-limiting nature of the condition, which is never life-threatening, is sufficient. In severe cases, we recommend a rehabilitation treatment, and in very rare instances, surgical intervention may be considered.
