In a functional voice disorder, there are changes in vocal quality and limitations in vocal performance without apparent organic or structural abnormalities of the vocal organs. The voice disorder is caused by unfavorable voice use. Functional voice disorders are classified into "excessive voice use" (hyperfunctional dysphonia) and "insufficient voice use" (hypofunctional dysphonia).

Treatment:

In most cases, the symptoms can be treated through professional speech therapy voice training. Rarely, intervention by a physician may be necessary.
