Occupational voice disorders

Occupational voice disorders can occur when there is a mismatch between the demanded vocal performance and the vocal capacity. This most commonly happens during prolonged or loud speaking, especially in a noisy environment. This overexertion can lead to hoarseness.

Examples of vocally demanding professions include teachers, call center employees, educators, lawyers, and trainers, where the voice is strained for many hours daily. Vocal training can help improve vocal technique, and vocal hygiene measures are important. Therefore, it is advisable for some professions to undergo a phoniatric suitability examination (a phoniatric assessment) before starting training.
