Reinke's Edema
Reinke's Edema is an edema of the vocal cords in the so-called Reinke's space. This causes the vocal cords to vibrate slower and irregularly, resulting in a deep and hoarse voice. It often affects smokers who use their voices forcefully. Laryngostroboscopy reveals a glassy, sometimes plicated swelling of the affected parts of the vocal cords.
Treatment:
Is it possible to treat Reinke's Edema without surgery?
In many cases, we can treat Reinke's Edema with the Blue Laser or KTP Laser under local anesthesia. It is a painless treatment that lasts approximately 5 minutes per session.
In cases of advanced Reinke's Edema, a treatment under general anesthesia would be recommended to restore the vocal cord structures (reconstruction).

Depending on the severity of the Reinke's Edema, the treatment plan is adjusted. It is even possible to achieve a soprano voice after a successful operation. It is important to focus on wound healing and to quit smoking if possible.

Blue Laser:
For years, we have been successfully using the Blue Laser for the treatment of various vocal cord conditions under local anesthesia. The treatment is painless and does not require general anesthesia or hospital admission. The procedure usually takes less than 3 minutes, and patients can be discharged on the same day.
What is the Blue Laser?
The so-called "blue laser" is a photoangiolytic laser with unique applications (wavelength of 445 nm). It has two special properties that are of great importance to the phonosurgeon (vocal cord surgery): first, a cutting ability, and second, a photoangiolysis capability.
How is the treatment performed?
Laser light is directed onto the tissue in the larynx through thin glass fibers.
